Barium sulfate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal or amorphous white powder that undergoes polycrystalline transformation at around 1150 ℃ and begins to decompose at around 1400 ℃. It is soluble in sulfuric acid and molten alkali, slightly soluble in boiling hydrochloric acid, and almost insoluble in water. Stable chemical properties, easily mixed with potassium permanganate, calcium carbonate, or alkali metal nitrates to form eutectic crystals, and reduced to barium sulfide by co heating with carbon. Industrial precipitated barium sulfate can be used as a filler in the paint, ink, rubber, and plastic industries, as a filling agent for insulation tapes, as a surface coating agent for impression paper and copperplate paper, as a sizing agent for textiles, and also in industries such as raw materials, ceramics, batteries, enamel, glass, and fragrances.
